Common Hopes

I’m compelled to post a long video clip by Obama (over 30 minutes), followed by an artistic interpretation, because I believe it’s a message for all Americans.  It doesn’t matter if you’re Republican, Democratic, Independent, or undecided…it matters that you’re human, and that you “get it”.

Obama’s speech from today:

Song for the night:  West Side Story - America, Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim (Owen gave this video to Dave for Christmas, 2005 - what did Owen know, that we are still learning? Okay, so Rita Morena was hot, and Owen was young - this was a gift horse of many colors, Dave - and there’s always an overlap between reality and artistic interpretation - if you’re looking.  We’re looking.)

  1. I’ve been actively campaigning for Sen. Obama since Feb. 2007. I thought I had all his speeches memorized, but this one was jaw-dropping. I was bawling by the end because he spoke such truth.

In 2001 I performed the above song and dance “America” in a stage production of West Side Story — I was the Puerto Rican in the red dress (yes, I played a Puerto Rican, the makeup was crazy)

My point is, I really relate to this post. :) Owen had excellent taste, thank you for this.

  2. I printed out that speech, and I read every word.

Then I saw a report today that he had written it himself the night before, after Michelle and the children had gone to bed.

    damn, he’s good.
