Coyote Medicine, Halloween, and Speculation

If Owen were physically here this year, he might dress as a coyote for Halloween.  In fact, I think he might dash in and out of driveways and bushes behind us come Wednesday, when we all go out to trick-or-treat.  I’ll be keeping the eyes in the back of my head peeled open wide, searching for his shadow.  Coyote is the prankster.  You take it from there.

Lea read Owen’s medicine cards when he was about 13.  Among others, he had coyote medicine, bat, and wolf.  I can’t remember the rest at the moment.  These were the standouts, but there were more winged animals, and all were significant then and now.

Because Owen isn’t here to argue my speculations, I can say whatever I want.  However, I tend to carefully examine the thoughts I share in this forum, in order to portray the man he was, as accurately as possible.  Certainly, there are things I can’t share yet.  There will come a time, though, when I can publish Owen’s poetry, and the random thoughts he would have wanted you to read.

Tonight was tough.  The Friday before Halloween, my trip to the River in the dark, the white rose, the moon, the fog, and the coyote…the prankster, watching “from under some dark glasses”.  Owen loved sunglasses, he bought them frequently, and one of his last pair still hangs in the hallway to his rooms.

Nat stopped by a little while ago, to collect horror flicks from Owen’s room.  They had made an agreement, that whoever went first, the other would get his stuff.  Nat came to get some of Owen’s stuff tonight.  They spent years watching these movies together in the nights before Halloween.  Nat will continue to watch with Owen, but Owen won’t be able to comment in the ways of years past.  They will find new ways, of that, I am sure.

Owen’s favorite numbers were 13 and 31 - both adding up to 4, the number of communication.  Owen communicates in many ways - music, flying insects (moths, butterflies, and dragonflies mainly), birds, and animals of all species are the most prevalent.  I’m thankful for them all.  We made a promise to keep in touch, no matter the distance, no matter the method.  We’re keeping our promise.

“No regrets, Coyote.”  Owen was a romantic.  He loved, and was loved.  No regrets.

  1. I love the new photo. Perfect. Reflective, thinking, touched by light…

  2. I really enjoyed that tune. As a Halloween treat, I bet Owen’s going to sing to you another Joni Mitchell song- “Don’t Worry ‘Bout Me, and sayin’ as one line goes, “Look out for yourself, that should be the rule”. Take care and have a peaceful weekend.
